MDGrape-3 (formerly known as Institute of Physical & Chemical Research) in Yokohama has built a supercomputer that breaks the 1 Petaflops barrier. This supercomputer is three times faster than the Blue Gene/L - the currently fastest supercomputer out there.

The cost for MDGrape-3 was just 9 million USD which equals to 15 USD per Gigaflop. The Blue Gene/L solution costs 140 USD per Gigaflop. So how did they manage to keep the costs at 9 million? Well, they had lots of support from Intel, SGi Japan and NEC. The supercomputer runs on 4808 Dual-core Intel Xeon chips. The clock frequency is yet unknown.

Editor's note: How long will it take for IBM to retake the crown?
