| | | | While Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates serving up a presentation at CES on the company's new "digital lifestyle" approach, a Windows Media Center PC being used during a product demonstration crashed and refused to accept any input commands. But while promoting what he calls the "digital lifestyle," Gates showed how vulnerable all consumers -- even the world's richest man -- are to hardware and software bugs. During a demonstration of digital photography with a soon-to-be-released Nikon camera, a Windows Media Center PC froze and wouldn't respond to Gates' pushing of the remote control.
Later in the same presentation, another Windows system crashed to the "blue screen of death" while a Microsoft product manager tried to demonstrate an new, upcoming video game.
Later in the 90-minute presentation, a product manager demonstrated the ostensible user-friendliness of a video game expected to hit retail stores in April, Forza Motor Sport. But instead of configuring a custom-designed race car, the computer monitor displayed the dreaded "blue screen of death" and warned, "out of system memory."
This is not the first time Bill Gates has suffered major embarrassment at a trade show. A similar situation happened when he publicly unveiled the Windows 98 operating system during the Comdex Spring 1998 convention.
Gates was demonstrating the newest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system when it crashed during his presentation at the Comdex Spring 1998 Convention. The software is supposed make computers simpler to use.
