| | | | Before, everyone who wanted to use a games console to use as a computer would need to hack it with various chips. With Playstation 3 this seems to change.
Ken Kutaragi, Sony Computer Entertainment president, reviels that the hard drive-versions of the Cell-based Playstation 3 will come with some form of Linux pre-installed. They call it a supercomputer and not just a console. The standard version of the PS3 will not include a HDD, but Ken Kutaragi says they will ship versions with a 2.5" HDD installed.
"It can connect a keyboard, and it has all the necessary interfaces. It can run media, and it can run on a network. It's got such an all-around purpose, and it's open. It will become completely open if we equip it with Linux, and programmers will be able to do anything with it. It's the same thing with the graphics, since it's got the shaders."
