PUSH 2005 - First Report - Sat. 09:44 CET
Posted by: ironfist on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 08:40
Submitted by ironfist
PUSH 2005 started yesterday at noon and most of the pre-registered people have shown up. I would expect about 20-22 people and we are expecting at least 3 more today.

When the fileserver (2x160 GB) finally was brought up it was filled up within a few hours with programming code...

So far we have not had any presentations (since we expect more people today) but they will start sometime today and tonight we will have a little "party" with a few beers and sauna.

There are a few AmigaONEs and Powerbooks running and the WiFi 54 Mbit network is working just fine. We had a few problems with electricity yesterday. We burnt three or four power fuses and we started connecting our tables to different parts of the building. This table is probably the most power-hungry table with many ODWs together with our other machines..

There will be more reports later on, but I guess you are all crying for updates.

To all of you who miss this event - Shame on you! :)

The first pictures have been posted here.

PPC680x0 has become freeware

The tool PPC680x0 has become freeware.

PPC680x0 is a source level converting utility, which means that you can now convert any kind of Motorola 680x0 source codes directly to PowerPC source codes. It uses several methods to optimize the output code and therefore adapts it to work optimal with the pipelining- and parallel instruction system of the PowerPC family.

PUSH 2005 to be held February 25-27th
Posted by: ironfist on Friday, December 10, 2004 - 18:35
Submitted by ironfist
PUSH 2005 has been in planning for quite some time now and the place is now booked. We will be at Wartagården in Göteborg, Sweden the last weekend of February. We welcome all PowerPC users (yes, Mac- and Amiga-users included).

Wartagården is the same location as PUSH 2004 were held. We will use the large room for our machines and the other rooms for sleeping Norwegians.. :)

Sauna, showers and a fully equipped kitchen is available. The building is easily reachable with local trams and buses.

The price has not been set yet but expect somewhere around 300 SEK for the entire weekend. All money will be used to pay expenses and if anything is left it will go to PUGS savings for other events.

More information with happenings and prices will follow.

Freescale and processors

New Chips

It's been known for some time that Freescale were working on new PowerPC processors. Now they've been announced and they are substantially different from the previous G4 designs, they still follow the same philosophy of low power consumption but this time doing so at the same time as increasing overall system performance.

The latest 7447A G4 runs at up to 1.5GHz and can be found in Apple's 15" and 17" PowerBooks. Freescale (previously Motorola Semiconductor) have concentrated on the embedded market where low power consumption rules rather than absolute maximum performance, thus the clock speed has not soared like the Pentium 4 but then neither has pipeline length or the power consumption. The highest performing Pentium 4s already use in excess of 100 Watts, the next generation G4 7448 is expected to require less than 10 Watts at 1.4 GHz. Of course when performance is needed there's always the Altivec unit which was never been lacking, to encourage it's use an increasing number of routines are being made available by Freescale for use by their customers.

Read the complete article at OSNews.

Note; Genesi also informed they will support the G4 7448 with the Pegasos. A board was also shown at SNDF in Frankfurt.
