Post subject: Fedora Core 4 on the Pegasos
Hi,

Im posting this here also. Just tried out the Fedora Core 4 installation on the Pegasos, and it worked very fine.

More and more Linux distribution comes to supporting PowerPC and the Pegasos platform.

Means also that GGS-Data from now also offers Pegasos also with Fedora Core 4 installed. There is a couple of choices by now, so you can choose which one you prefer most.

If you would like to install Fedora 4 on your Pegasos, you find the isos to download here: Link to Fedora 4 iso-images

When it comes to Ubuntu - the Linux for Humans Being, Ubuntu Breezy will be the choice forward.

Post subject: RE: Sound problem
have you tried to run this as root? could be a permission problem.. Hard to tell..

Post subject: RE: Sound problem
yes I entry as root
Trizt - Jan 17, 2006 - 16:36
Post subject: RE: Sound problem
yashin71, keep in mind to not use the root account to much, as the risk is a lot bigger that things goes wrong if something bad would happen.

Said that, what does dmesg say?
Do you have the following files:
Code:

/dev/adsp
/dev/audio
/dev/dsp
/dev/mixer
/dev/sequencer
/dev/sound/adsp
/dev/sound/audio
/dev/sound/dsp
/dev/sound/mixer
/dev/sound/sequencer

Have you installed OSS support for your alsa?
How does your /etc/modules.d/alsa look like?

Thanks for your answers. I have noticed that I miss the dir /dev/sound. The problem is this. I download the disc 2 another time, and i reinstall all and i check it
Trizt - Jan 17, 2006 - 21:43
Post subject: RE: Sound problem
The /dev/adsp, /dev/audio, /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer and /dev/sequencer are usualy symlinks to the "files" in /dev/sound with the same name.
The problem could be related to udev, as I haven't used RedHat since 7.3, I don't know how well the transfear from devfs to udev went in Fedora, you could see if there are any updates and do those and see if the problem solves by itseƶf.

Post subject: RE: Sound problem
Can you try to create the following file and see if that solves the problem?

Code:

kozz@peggy:~$ cat .asoundrc
pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave.pcm hw
}

dholm - Jan 19, 2006 - 07:08
Post subject: RE: Sound problem
I believe the correct syntax would be:
Code:

cat > ~/.asoundrc << EOF
pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave.pcm hw
}
EOF

Thanks to everybody. I have tried what you have written but the same doesn't work. How can I attach a photo to a message? Which version of Linux done use on the PegII that works really?
dholm - Jan 19, 2006 - 12:06
Post subject: RE: Sound problem
You have to make the photo available via http and post it with the IMG button.
Linux kernel 2.6.14 and newer has full Pegasos II support.

yashin71,

All Linux distributions that supports the Pegasos works to use with the Pegasos.

I have myself not any Pegasos with Fedora running at this particular moment, why I cant answer your question right up and down about this problem you got with sound in Fedora.

Here is the link with info about Fedora 4 on the Pegasos:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SupportedPowerPC

There is also a wiki there where you can search for Helpcontents on different issues, and they also have a supportforum. It should be most likely that you will get a straight answer from Fedora if you ask the question in their forum.

Here we do use Debian Linux and Ubuntu Linux on Pegasos machines, which both works good and without any problem.

And there is also users here as I think you see that mainly runs Gentoo on their Pegasos.

Here is link to the Debian Stable Net-installer CD: Link

Here is link to the Ubuntu 5.10 Installer CD: Link

#message photo

You mean to put a picture in you post in the forum ?

Its done by clicking the img-button when you are writing a message. This button is not present when you use 'Quick reply'. If you do for instance click 'Quote' for the message you want to answer on, you will get another page with more available buttons to use.

Edit,

See that dholm already answered about pictures, so well, as more answer thats better.

Yes, I found the following one particulary helpful. Before I didn't know how to install Linux on my Pegasos but after reading this all the pieces came together. Bbonk
