Hi All
This is my very first post, so i will introduce myself, atleast, a little.
I have been Amiga user since the old good times of the A1000/500, and then, MorphOS user since some years back. Since I came from the Amigaish word, i dont have a clue of *nixes.
well, i have tried to install the 5.10 version of ubuntu on my pegasos2, following the Kozz guide, and all went all right. I booted the install cd, installed and in the last step, i opened another shell and created a chrp bootable kernel.Then reseted the machine.
Back in SmartFirmware, I booted the kernel with the apropiated command, and in fact it boots. I get some text, in which bottom i can read "Calling quiesce" thingie, and the, its supposed to get a screen clear and more text, but i only get a black screen.
My monitor says "out of range", but i doubt it. Its a CRT 19", so it can accept almost al modes used in text screens. Anyway, i see the HD led blinking and if i do a softreset by keyboard, it backs to openfirmware, so i suppose the system is running without output.
My setup is quite common. Pegasos2, 512mb ram, radeon 8500, and a dedicated 40 gb HD for linux, configured as hda

Hi,
Will you not get any display when gdm loads ? Or is this during the second part of the installation ?
You can give argument to the kernel upon boot, like video=radeon:1024x768-8@70 for instance.
I have not used this argument since long time by now though, as it always works right out of the box. Worth to give a try I think.

I always use the video-argument when I boot Linux. Just to be sure.

Its doesnt matter if i add the video=radeon etc parameter to the kernel loader, since the video output disappears in both ways.
No i dont get video while GDM loads, but nor even before. Once i put the order to boot in Smartfirmware (which is something like "boot hd:0 boot vmlinuz-2.6.12-6-powerpc root=/dev/hda1"), i can see some text that appears underneath, and then, it clears the screen, simply no video at all.
I mean, i cant see the text since the linux mount the units, so no GDM at all neither. :/

I just tried booting Ubuntu giving the video argument, it works perfectly well, however you need to specify radeonfb as ironfist mentioned, it doesn't seems to take radeon as I suggested.
So if you installed the system to the first partition on the harddrive (hd:0 in firmware /dev/hda1 in linux) and you do have the kernel in the drawer /boot on this partition, your boot string should be:
The above should open the console in the resolution 800x600, 8bit @70Hz. If your monitor cant display this frequenz, please change the resolution to one that suite your monitor.
Whats your graphic card ?

I see now you said it is a Radeon 8500. I have not tried such graphic card myself, but it is supposed to work.

I feel ubuntu A LOT slower than my beloved MOS and even AOS.
Maybe I have to choose another, faster, distribution?

Not many OSes are faster than MOS nor AOS. But not many

Good question, I'm not sure where the best place to look for help is. But since you are using Ubuntu maybe these links can be of help...
Usually I just search on google if I have a special question, it almost always gives me the answer.

Yes, loading times is many times a lot slower in Linux then in MorphOS and in AmigaOS too.
MorphOS is the quickest and most responsive operating system I ever used. My guess is that this is one thing all we, who like MorphOS or Amiga-systems, will notice.
But as ironfist also mentioned, there is a bigger base of software for Linux. However I do myself feel it really is a very big software base for MorphOS and for Amiga-systems, especially if taking into relation to how small the entiry community is. I would like to say the community really is a creative community, which make it a very nice community.
So I have the impression that perhaps for You and for a lot of other people, it is something like, that many use MorphOS because they like to use it, and when there is things thats not possible to do in MorphOS, you can use for instance Linux, for that purpose. Different operating system - and software - can be used for different purposes.
