I've got a problem with online updates on SUSE 10. Guess it's because I didn't download the 10.0 final ISOs but the 10.1 alpha - so my fault, but maybe it can be easily fixed with your help?

Symptoms:

1) While the addition of additional installations sources does work for 3rd party sites (like the PPC multimedia RPMs mentioned at PPCZone), I can't add one of the SuSE mirrors. No matter how I vary the pathes and mirrors, I always get the error "no_instsrc_on_media".

So what mirror/path do you enter to keep your installation up-to-date?

2) SuSE Watcher doesn't work here. Can't connect, although otherwise the internet connection does work (browser). Looking at the "details" output when trying an online update, it seems that it tries to connect to the URL "www.suse.de<br>".

Which configuration file do I have to edit to change this wrong entry?

(Could only find the YaST2 server files, i.e. the entries for the CD drive where I installed SuSE from and that hungarian server already mentioned.)

Thanks for your reply! - Yes, will (and wanted to) do, but there was a server error which prevented me from posting. So I reported that error to the webmaster and tried here. But will have a look again at PPCZone now if it's fixed already.

Hi,

There is some different Linux-distributions to choose from now for the Pegasos. Smile

Hi,

Well, Im writing little here. SuSE have quite recently been adapted to the Pegasos. And it is also from my understanding a development alpha-version in its current state. So out from this I make the conclusions it may contains bugs, which they also say.

Here is a page with some info:

http://www.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#SUSE_Linux_10.1_Alpha2

So my suggestion is to wait a little bit, to a more stable release being available, or report bugs you find to SuSE. There is a link to where submit bugs from the link above.

Debian, Gentoo and Ubuntu is distributions that works very good with the Pegasos. So I would like to recommend any of this. Ubuntu is a very nice and easy to use distribution.

I will probably try out SuSE little bit later.

Gunne: If you have read on PPCZone you will see that
it is 10.0 beta3 and 10.0 that first worked on the Pegasos.

The SUSE guy over there got a Smartcard bundle from
Genesi for his testing..

ironfist,

Yes, I have followed that thread on PPCZone.

However, I have not tried out this SuSE myself yet, I was thinking about waiting a short while before I do. Therefore I was little curios if you might had given it a try.

As what I also understand from what the SuSE guy writes in the thread, online updates is not available for the development version, but is for the stable version.

From my understanding, there might also bee some issues if using Yast, and depending if you are using a RDB disk label, or MBR disk label.

And it seems also some people already successfully is using SuSE.

Im looking forward to give a try myself little later.

Its nice with more and more distributions coming to support the Pegasos platform.

SUSE 10.0 works fine on Bull Estrella 300 Series (PPC PReP)
workstations.. I would be surprised if it didn't work on the Peg..

ironfist,

Well, I have myself used SuSE (the 7.3) on the Pegasos before, so sure, its no problem to use it on the Pegasos.

However this OpenSUSE is new development. For your satisfaction also, here is little info from the OpenSUSE homepage:

---------------------------

From OpenSUSE
This is the start page for all the POWER/PPC-related stuff at openSUSE.
WARNING: openSUSE installation on PowerPC computers requires harddrive partitioning by means of external tools, and manual bootloader installation.
Back in the good old days, we had a boxed product for the PPC architecture. The last release was SL 7.3. Later we focused on the POWER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_POWER) hardware from IBM and released only server products like SLES7, SLES8, and SLES9. All these products were in internal use also on our Apple hardware. Unfortunately, we were not able to release these products officially to the public. Now we are back!

Reference: http://www.opensuse.org/POWER@SUSE

-------------

Supported PowerPC hardware

Desktop Mac:

Dual G5 1.8 - fans run correctly
G5 (single CPU 1.8GHz "PowerMac9,1" and the iMac has no fan driver (http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc64-dev/2005-September/005629.html) yet. Use ear plugs)
G4
G3
604
603
601

Mobile Mac:

PowerBook G4 (small limitations currently)
PowerBook G3
iBook G4
iBook G3

Genesi

Open Desktop Workstation (http://www.pegasosppc.com/odw.php) (G4, 1GHz, based on Pegasos II)
Pegasos II board (http://www.pegasosppc.com/pegasos.php) (G4, 1GHz)

IBM RS/6000:

all CHRP and PReP systems

(except the models with RS64 cpu, like p620, p660, F80
they need a kernel patch which will be in 2.6.14)

IBM iSeries:

all

(as far as they are claimed to run linux here: IBM iSeries hardware list (http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/linux/hardware.html))
Well, not really. hwinfo does not recognize the virtual disks anymore, so YaST will not find them. (related bugzilla report (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=94272)). Installing onto a native SCSI disk connected to an IPR controller will work.

Does not run:

Mac with Nubus

Have a nice Sunday !

The only problem with RS/6000 and Bull machines is they must
boot over the network. Their versions of OF is not even close
to SmartFirmware, like reading Linux-partitions..

Otherwise the machines are rock solid (well they should be
considering what they cost..)
