XGL seems quite cool, but also unfinished... Afaik, it isn't even officially released (except for developers and "early adopters")

But would we really need X? How about just doing something similar instead?

Jupp3,

Well, XGL could be a cool feature, however I cannot myself see the use of it on a daily use.

But a small glue effect when moving window on the desktop close to each other could be useful.

I also find the context menues coming more and more useful.

The purpose of XGL is not to make "cool" 3D-effects although it can be used for that. XGL was implemented because Xorg, like most other modern systems, has switched to compositing rather than raster drawing and composition is handled very naturally by 3D libraries like OpenGL and is hardware accelerated on a level which greatly superceeds that of simple blitting methods.

dholm,

That has nothing to do with what I said, that I feel it is little bit difficult to see what use it could bring by now in a daily use. Im sure it will be to see in the future.

Like Develin wrote above, this discussion was about changes in context menues in Ambient. And there is other things or features that can be of more recent use in Ambient.

I also write this by now, to who it may concern:

Ambient, like as MorphOS is developed by a small development team. People who use it, use it because they like it.

There is no need to try behave like stepping onto some big horses... stating there is more or better things in any other system as soon something concerning Ambient or MorphOS is discussed. Everybody knows that people who maintains Linux or Windows development do it as their profession, while people behind MorphOS and/or Ambient development do it on a free base.

It takes a lot of the burden off the CPU and gives it to the GPU which would otherwise sit mostly idle. CPU cycles are better spent on the application tasks running rather than rendering the GUI, which the GPU does a much better job of anyway.

Hi dholm & ironfist,

To read about XGL is:

- Xgl is highly experimental code, and have only been tested on a very few hardware configurations. Depending on driver it might make your computer unusable. Despite of this it works good on many platforms. -

I wonder what Your reason is to 'troll' in threads concerning Ambient development ?

Please be so kind and move Your discussion somewhere else. Thanks in advance !

Check six posts up where you wrote about XGL not being useful in daily use, I hadn't posted anything in this thread before that. If you didn't want to discuss XGL you shouldn't have taken it up in the first place.

Since I only replied to your post I guess you are the troll then. Begone now!

dholm,

I would like to give my biggest apologize.

All,

Posts in this thread was posted in the thread concerning changes of context menues in Ambient.

Now moved into this new thread. This thread is for discussion about what the topic says, request concerning Xgl in Ambient.

If anyone would like to have a general discussion about Xgl, its features, technical issues or anything else concerning Xgl, please open a new thread about it.

About Xgl:

Xgl is an X server architecture layered on top of OpenGL. It is at an early stage in development and a number of important pieces are still missing. Xglx is the only server yet that use this architecture, it requires an already existing X server and is only intended for testing and development.

Xegl is a new server based on the Xgl architecture. It runs on standalone OpenGL with the EGL extensions.

Further information about Xgl and Xegl is to find at: freedesktop.org

I really hope you can implement it soon in Ambient. Bigfoot's
3D support is very good.
