Was a bit curious about the prices on the upcommng PS3 in Hong Kong and went to one of the stores homepage that I had visited during my last visit over there and got a shocking news, they had to close down due lawsuits that Sony had made against the.

Here is the story:

Lik-Sang.com Out of Business due to Multiple Sony Lawsuits

OUT OF BUSINESS NOTICE

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

The whole story you can read here.

IMHO it's bad that Sony does this, remember those Linux Kits for PS2, at first there was those that only worked on the Japanese model, so people who wanted to run linux had to get a Japanese PS2 from companies like Lik Sang, now if there comes something that will only work on a Japanese PS3, then you are out of luck if you don't have money to take a trip to Japan.

Quite funny he got one before they even begun to sell ones, his dad CEO at Sony?
By the way, the image is a PS2 and not a PS3.

OK first you claim you have to buy a japanese PS2 to run PS2 linux, Which is false.

Then when I provide a picture of the actual envelop you try making fun about my dad being CEO at Sony, Which is absolutely irrelevant.
I purchased this kit for $499 as it came with [complete] the official development and hardware information of the PS2 allowing me to utilitize the "Emotion Engine" in whatever way I want.

Secondly if you hung around on the ps2linux mailinglists you would know there are some sony representatives around there who stated that linux for the PS3 _WILL_ be available for all interested once it's launched, But hey they launch PS3 in Japan and you start whining about it already- Grow up for gods sake.
Sony actually had a long tradition allowing users to write games for their consoles, The most notifiable ones are Netyaroze which was a SDK version of the PS1, Due to hardware limitations of the PS1 it was virtually impossible to expand it to a developer tool.
PS2 Linux- This time Sony even provided ALL their developer documentation minus the IOP which isn't utilitizable under linux anyway due to the HAL running on the IOP- Yes you guessed right consoles are not anything like computers, The IOP Hal is there for two reasons, the first and major one- full access to the IOP would be like sony saying to all their commercial customers (yes game companies plays big money to sony to release a game that includes their copyprotection and magicgate support)
Total access to the IOP would mean you could easially write a bootloader in linux that would allow you to boot burnt games, well now this kind of happened anyway but that's thanks to hardwork of some reverse engineers.
The second reason being that a console isn't as stated before anything like a computer in memory layout or schematics, I don't know if you looked at the PS2 at a schematic level but it has more incommon with a graphicscard than it does with PC architectures as we know it.
There was a reason some developers thought it was tricky writing software (read games) for the PS2, The HAL makes the underlying hardware totally transparent, you download any SDL game recompile, and it will run although not optimally of course, but it allows for a faster porting process as you can concentrate porting the time critical potions of the code first.
Other than that the HAL isn't really stopping you anywhere, you have full access to every chip excluding the IOP, (which can be accessed if you know what you're doing but at that point you're hosing linux out of the system)

And finally you probably noticed the PS2 came with yabasic on a cd? That's to maximize profit of course, programmable devices can be claimed to be computers and skip the 1.2% import tax!

This was true at the begining, the linux kit was only working for the Japanese first model, later on there was released linux kits that worked on later Japense, US and European models too.

Yes dude, The BETA was released in japan only, The release version - version 1.0 was released all over the world although in limited print; However I still think they carry disks even though the harddrive/network interface and the keyboard is no longer available (well a compatible network interface is easy to obtain as sony sells one for gaming purpose, not sure if it comes with the necessary harddrive connectors though, otherwise Final Fantasy XI comes with both harddrive and network interface afaik) - Any random usb keyboard/mouse will work so that's not a major problem either.

Either way can you please verify facts for the next mis-statement ?

I will verify facts twice or more if needed if you take the time to really read what people write next time.
