PUSH Report

Please click 'Read more' for the report from PUSH last weekend.
Last weekend we held our third PowerPC party. The first party was held in May last year, the second in February this year. Last Friday I had to get up early. We would open the doors to PUSH at 12:00 and everything had to be ready by then. First disconnecting the computers, loading the car and get to WartagÄrden. Me and David Holm had to purchase the last things (knives and forks, plates, cups, coffee etc) in racer speed.
We got back and helped Gunne, Kozz, Trizt and Merko placing the tables, laying out cables and getting the WiFi up running. At 12:00 we opened up and we had time to connect and start up our computers. Within a few hours more and more people arrived. By Friday evening we had almost filled our two long tables and we fired up the grill - had a few drinks and good barbeque.

During the first night people tried staying up as long as they could. Various movies and series were shown on the big screen. We also played Mr Frek's music. People drank litres of coffee and Jolt and when the sun came back around 04:00 most people went to bed for a few hours.

By Saturday morning Kamelryttarn arrived with his x86 laptop. Jepp, the only x86 machine at this party. Lucky for him he had Fedora installed. If he would have showed up with Windows we would have taken care of that the following night.. :-) PUSH is a Windows Free Zone after all..
At Saturday evening we fired up the grill once again. This time we spiced up the meat with David's 'MegaDeath' sauce. Man it was hot!

That night David Holm held a fabulous AltiVec presentation. He shared 10 easy steps in making our code AltiVec-optimized. During PUSH also a few programs were released. Stefan Blixth of Onyxsoft released a pre-release of SnapIT. SnapIT is an advanced MorphOS-native screengrabber. It works similar to SGrab but has a MUI interface. Lisardman released version 0.2 of his Pegasos Rescue CD Mupper.
On Sunday morning people started packing and dropped out one by one..

What about attendance? Well, we almost filled up our 2 long tables, we had lots of computers running. The 100 Mbit network ran fine all the time and our Linux-powered Pegasos file server never choked. It handled all traffic with ease. Although most people used Pegasos we also had AmigaONE and Macintosh machines running in the network. Everyone could connect to the file server. The WiFi was also stable for those who used it. To make all pizza orders easy we had an internal Pegasos webserver running with PHP and a MySQL database for taking orders.

To summerize the event I say it was a good one. This was the third one and the most organized ever. All attendants got a welcome letter with their designated IP addresses aswell all network info they needed. The internal webserver really helped us out when it came to large pizza orders. We also asked attendants to answer a few questions about PUSH and we recieved an overall very positive feedback.

Bill Buck of Genesi dropped by our IRC channel for a short Q&A session.

See you all next year!

Kristian E, PUSH Organizer.
PS. I would like to thank Sumsung for letting us borrow ten TFT monitors for attendants travelling very far.

Thanks for nice review. Looks like event was bigger than last one.
