Genesi Q/A Log from PUSH
Posted by: ironfist on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 12:56
Submitted by ironfist
Please click 'Read more' for the Q&A session we had with Bill Buck at PUSH.
We asked him about the EFIKA, 7447A/7448 and graphics drivers.
* bbrv has joined #push

bbrv Boo!

bbrv How is Push going?!
ironfist|PUSH doing just fine

bbrv How is attendence?
ironfist|PUSH we have large tables and plenty of interested people

TriztPUSH bbrv; had been nicer if you had had the time to be here with us in real life!
bbrv We would have liked to as we are in Spain, but we need to work Monday. :-)

bbrv so anything we could answer anything about?

ironfist|PUSH have you found any gfx-chip for the EFIKA ?
bbrv trying different cards now and working with cards from ATI and nVIDIA

ironfist|PUSH aren't nvidia pretty cold towards linux/ppc ?
TriztPUSH bbrv; but nvidia has been quite slow with their PPC driver development
bbrv we guess that will change
bbrv they need to and so does ATI as Intel moves into their business
space in a very powerful way. Intel is eating business from both organizations.

TriztPUSH bbrv; you know if they really have started to work on the
ppc driver? last I talked with the guys there they where still in a
pre-stage where it wasn't sure if they would work on it or not
bbrv Freescale is a logical choice for both ATI and nVIDIA and by default so is the PegasosPPC/ODW
as we are now after Apple's choice the only PPC based full platform partner for the future (today). Both IBM and Freescale have to answer the question of customers: if Apple switched why shouldn't we? Freescale in particular needs to move toward system enablement and beyond the sale of simply chips. Even organizations like ATI are being held accountable for total system performance when in fact they only provide a portion of it.

ironfist|PUSH what about the peg 2.5 ?
bbrv waiting for 8641 to really introduce a new Pegasos, but there is something new coming with the 7448 - and we don't mean just a new CPU card for the existing Pegasos (that is coming to - we have prototypes)
bbrv the SoC is only way to really get the cost down

ironfist|PUSH the Peg 2.5 was a freescale ref-board, right?
bbrv HPC I (High Performance Computer) and HPC II are Freescale Reference Boards that we ported
our HAL/OF implementation so everything working on the ODW could work. HPC I was demo'ed in China when the MII-Feescale National Linux Lab was launched. HPC I and II were demonstrated by Freescale at the Freescale Technology Forum in Orlando.
ironfist|PUSH the hardware sure looked good

ironfist|PUSH what's the status on 7447A ?
ironfist|PUSH still too expensive?
bbrv it is not really that, It has more to do with the fact that the 7447 is completely adequate as it is - especially when AltiVec is used.
bbrv We will probably release a 7448 version and skip the 7447A if the release version checks out for power and heat. The samples have proven things are moving in the right direction.

DevePUSH bbrv: is there any plans in the near future to support the
MOS-developer in full scale or are they on their own totaly from now
on ?
bbrv The issue with MorphOS is just finding a solid market for it. It will take some time, plus we need to make as least as much of an investment in MorphOS as we have in the past and we cannot afford to do that now, but we hope to do so eventually.

TriztPUSH bbrv; how does it look with the dualcore g4s? anything you
can leak from freescale about it?
bbrv the 8641 is dual core
TriztPUSH bbrv; it's finished the dual core version? last I read
about it, it's still single core
bbrv 7448 is, but the 8641 is coming....

AmiXmac bbrv: hey :) how about a laptop peg?
bbrv Well, the EFIKA 5K2 can be this
bbrv 400MHz is slow by market standards but it is enough and it would
make a cool platform for MorphOS. We need the 8641 and an AltiVec engine to really attack the opportunity.

ironfist|PUSH bbrv: could you give an estimated timeframe for end-
user release of Efika?
bbrv Hopefully before the end of the year
bbrv it just depends on how much excess capital we have to spend on
production

ironfist|PUSH bbrv: any price estimation?
bbrv not sure yet but less than 299

bbrv remember the EFIKA 5K2 is a development system with the objective to
create a two chip solution - CPU+ and Graphics Chip
bbrv the MPC5200 is an SoC (System on a Chip)

AmiXmac bbrv: so EFIKA can be the "next" Amiga computer? A new custom
based computer sorta?
bbrv Nothing we are selling will be an "amiga" anything...:-) Perhaps, a MorphOS something, but really the emphasis is about being "open," that is letting people decide what they want to run on *their* platform -- and that means "anything" ;-) .

bbrv Anyway...on a dial up so need to go.

ironfist|PUSH bbrv: Thanks
ironfist|PUSH have a great day, and enjoy Spain
bbrv :-)
bbrv adios!
TriztPUSH bbrv; have a nice day

* bbrv has left #push
