| | | | Silicon Graphics have decided to put their IRIX UNIX and all their MIPS servers to an end of life. They will take orders until December 29 this year and the goal is to have them delivered by March, next year.
SGI were one of the early adopters of the Intel Itanium architecture, but they had big problems with it. It was way too slow compared to their MIPS technology and was evolving too slow. SGI took a big hit on this and filed for bankrupcy protection in May this year. This week their reorganization plan was approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
The new organization will focus entirely on the Intel Itanium architecture and Linux.
The Unix Guardian has a great article about this and also the history from the start in 1982 at Stanford University.
