| | | | IBM's new Blue Gene/L will most likely be on top of place in the next Top 500 Supercomputer list, due next week. The Japanese Earth Simulator has been number one since June 2002.

Blue Gene/L's current peak speed is 70.72 Teraflops - twice the Earth Simulator's 35.86. Still, the Blue Gene/L is only a prototype and when finished - next year - a peak of 360 Teraflops is expected.
Blue Gene fits into just 64 full racks and consumes much less power. Compared to the current fastest supercomputers, Blue Gene is designed to consume one 15th the power and 10 times more compact. The supercomputer is a gigantic cluster of 700 MHz PPC440 CPUs - same CPU as in many handheld devices.

A small error slipped in.
Of course the CPUs are PPC 440 - not 405.

They're also 700Mhz not 500Mhz :)
