PC7447A - New Low-power G4

Atmel Corporation has released a new CPU, based on the MPC7447A CPU with even less power dissipation. The high performance version tops 1420 MHz and the low power version runs at 1167MHz and produces 9.2W of heat.

Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today the availability of the PC7447A microprocessor, the extended-reliability version of the MPC7447A from Freescale Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Inc. This high-performance, low-power, 32-bit implementation of the PowerPC RISC Instruction Set Architecture is the latest and fastest high-reliability device born of the long and productive collaboration between Atmel and Freescale Semiconductor. The PC7447A microprocessor targets massive data processing embedded applications, such as radars and graphic displays, where reliability over severe environmental conditions is a key success factor.

Manufactured on Freescale Semiconductor's 130 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) CMOS process technology, the PC7447A microprocessor can operate at up to 1420 MHz in a military junction temperature range of -55 degree Celsius to +125 degree Celsius. A low-power version of the PC7447A is also available at 1167 MHz with a power dissipation of 9.2 watts and less than 6 watts when the processor runs at 600 MHz. Additionally, dynamic on-chip power management features help to significantly reduce power consumption when the device's full processing capabilities are not required.

"Atmel's PC7447A extended-reliability microprocessor brings a significant shift in terms of speed versus power ratio, thus enabling the system designer to increase their system's performance and implement additional features into the application without jeopardizing its power budget," said Eric Marcelot, Atmel's Hi-Rel Microprocessors Marketing Manager. "The defense electronics industry will also appreciate the PC7447A microprocessor's backward compatibility with existing designs currently using the PC7xx (G3) or PC74xx (G4), thus enabling users to upgrade their application without excessive hardware and software redesign and qualification."

The PC7447A features a 512-Kbyte on-chip secondary level (L2) cache memory, full symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support, a 64-bit bus interface as well as full implementation of Freescale Semiconductor's AltiVecTM vector processing technology. The PC7447A microprocessor is available for both industrial and military temperature ranges and its 360-ball Hi-TCE Ceramic Ball Grid Array package sustains a high level of reliability when soldered on a standard FR4 board.

The PC7447A microprocessor is now available for sampling, and full production is scheduled for September 2004.
