| | | | A study of workers in three DELL factories reviled that workers on those factories did earn 2.1RMB per hour, which is far lower than the legal minimum wages in China. Seven of the Hong Kong universities has decided to not invest in DELL products.

| | | | The latest edition of the Top500.org List of the world's fastest super computers has been released. IBM BlueGene/L with 212992 700 MHz PowerPC 440 CPUs was upgraded and still holds the number one spot.
The surprising entrance for us Swedes was that we nailed the number five spot with a cluster owned by FRA - one of our military intelligence agencies. It is still a secret what this system will be used for.
The next Swedish addition is number 23 with a cluster running at the National Supercomputer Centre - NSC.

| | | | The North Carolina State University has created the first academic Playstation 3 cluster. They use 8 Playstations and with the 6 SPE's and 2 main-cores the cluster has 64 logical CPUs. All for a 5000 USD cost. The main problems were the 256 MB RAM and limited speed for double-precision calculations.

| | | | Bill and Raquel blogged today with a picture of a slick, blue miniature case for the EFIKA. No details except for the picture is known yet. What we can see from the picture is that it's slightly larger than the EFIKA and is built for use with the picoPSU.

| | | | Fujitsu has developed a key technology that would allow the company to make 5TB 3.5" hard drives and 1.5TB 2.5" hard drives for notebooks. Fujitsu claims that it was able to build a patterned media device with a one-dimensional array nanohole pattern with a track width of only 25 nm.

| | | | The adult entertainment industry holds their annual get together in Las Vegas and companies, big and small, including Pink Visual and Bangbros editor-in-chief, is going into a single direction: HD DVD is the preferred format. A spokes person for Bangbros said, "Blu-ray has superior quality, yes, but HD DVD is easier to produce, cheaper to produce and there are more HD DVD players in homes than there are Blu-ray players, for example in the Xbox 360." The adult entertainment industry thinks that the Blu-ray is all to expensive to produce and only the larger studios may afford it, but even for them it won't be economical to distribute Blu-ray.

| | | | Sony, Toshiba and IBM, short STI, will present at ISSCC the first details about a 65 nm Cell processor design, which, apparently, already runs at 6 GHz and 1.3 volts in STI's labs. Even if the power consumption will be less than for those PPE in PlayStation 3, it will use two power supplies to increase stability.

| | | | The latest Topp500.org list of the world's fastest super computers has been released. IBM BlueGene/L remains in the number one spot with 131072, 700 MHz PowerPC CPUs. This monster max out at 280 Tflops.
Number two is a Cray installation with 26544 Opteron CPUs just passing 100 Tflops. The fastest machine in Europe is the MareNostrum JS21 BladeCenter with 10240 PowerPC 970 CPUs running at 62 Tflops which makes a fifth place on the list.

| | | | MacSlash has an interesting article on PowerPC processors that were announced but never released, or in some cases only in limited editions. Some examples are the PowerPC 620 which was a 64-bit desktop CPU back in 1994 and the X⁷⁰⁴ which was supposed to run at more than twice the clockspeed of anything Intel had to offer at the time.
