Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Release Candidate

Yesterday Ubuntu presented the first Release Candidate of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support).

From Ubuntu.com: "We are now in the final stages of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS development. Everything is stabilizing and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS will certainly be a top-notch professional OS."

Mark Shuttleworth announced the next coming Ubuntu release, following after Dapper Drake, will have the code name: The Edgy Eft.

Dapper Drake is scheduled for being released in June of 2006.

In the announcement is to read about Xen for virtualisation, Xgl/AIGLX and many other things.

Linux 2.6.16 Released

The 2.6.16 version of the Linux kernel has been released after two and a half months of development. There are many changes and most notably for us are CELL processor support, cpufreq support for PPC970 and thermal control for dualcore 970MP. They have also abandoned GCC 2.9+ support and the minimum required GCC is 3.2.

Pagestream DTP for Linux PPC

The well known DTP software Pagestream is now available also for Linux PPC.

Grasshopper LLC Tuesday announced the first release of its PageStream desktop publishing application specifically designed for the LinuxPPC distribution. PageStream is also available for Mac OS, Windows, and Amiga variants with a large assortment of features and a 20-year history, Grasshopper said.

Genesi Becomes Ubuntu Partner

Genesi told us today they have achieved Partner status in the Ubuntu Linux project. No other information is available at the moment. Will this mean official Ubuntu support for the Pegasos?

Gentoo 2006.0 released

Today, Gentoo 2006.0 was released. The latest release of Gentoo now contains the new gentoo-installer to make the installation easier. Gentoo installer has several frontends, including the beautiful gtkfe.

This release has more improved PPC64 and of cource, as always, PPC support. Read more at www.gentoo.org.

Linux Beats Windows on Intel iMac

Linux is now successfully booting on the new Intel Core-Duo iMac's. A USB-drive, modified kernel, ELILO bootloader and a hacked VESAFB was used for booting. The distribution used was Gentoo.
