Is faster release cycles for Debian stable required ?
Posted by: gunne on Saturday, March 19, 2005 - 11:58

At ZDnet is an article where it is to read that according to Matthew Garret - Debian Project Leader (DPL) candidate and developer, Debian is not releasing a stable version of its software often enough. At the time of writing, it has been 31 months since the last Debian stable release (Woody) in July 2002.

While Debian does release more updated software through the Testing and Unstable versions, the Debian project makes it clear that this versions is not suitable for production use. The Testing distribution is described as 'not completely tested', and has no official support from the Debian security team, while Unstable should be run by developers and those who like to live on the edge.

X.org 6.8.2 was released yesterday and is available in portage now (in the '~ppc' profile). It also includes a patch that should fix the problems with the DRI Radeon driver on big-endian machines. The new Radeon driver should prove to be significantly faster than the old one, making most (open source) 3D games fully playable on the Pegasos II equipped with a Radeon 9x00.

Genesi is pleased to be involved and many ODW are being used to support the Pilot Project. A notable discussion about the Gentoo's participation was presented in this week's Gentoo Newsletter.
